Summer Fitness Kick Off in St. Bernard Parish


Chalmette – This Sunday, June 8, from 4pm-7pm at the St. Bernard Community Playground in Torres Park, Ochsner will bring summer fitness activities and medical information to an area that continues to recover post-Katrina. Activities will include the Elmwood Fitness Center Mobile Fitness Unit, a bus outfitted with child-sized exercise equipment, and several fitness stations sponsored by local groups. Ochsner for Children will offer advice on healthy lifestyles and prevention of childhood obesity. Enjoy food, raffles and giveaways at this free event provided through a partnership between Ochsner, the St. Bernard Community Playground Project and the Recreation Corporation.


"Ochsner is committed to making healthy lifestyles an accessible goal for the entire St. Bernard community, so we’re taking fitness on the road and bringing local children a mobile PE unit and tips on staying fit," explains, Dr. Patrick Quinlan, Ochsner Health System Chief Executive Officer. "Likewise," Polly Boudreaux of the Playground Project shares, "we have a strong commitment by local groups to promote healthy lifestyle fitness activities for the whole family. On Sunday, various booths will be set up to highlight local fitness opportunities."

Ochsner Offers Community Seminar on Benign Prostate Hypertrophy (BPH)

NEW ORLEANS – According to recent statistics, men over 50 have a higher risk of developing Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy (BPH), an enlarging of the prostate gland. In fact, most men don’t know the signs and symptoms of this condition. Dr. Harold Fuselier, Ochsner Urologist, will discuss BPH at a Hello Health Seminar on Thursday, June 12, at 6:00 p.m. at Chad’s Bistro, 3216 W. Esplanade Avenue in Metairie.

Ochsner Offers Community Seminar on Cataract Implants

NEW ORLEANS – By age 80, more than half of all Americans will have a cataract, yet many people still don’t know exactly what a cataract is and how to treat it. Dr. Pulin Shah, practicing ophthalmologist at Ochsner Baptist Medical Center, will discuss the latest techniques for cataract surgery at a Hello Health Seminar next Wednesday, June 11, at 12:00 p.m. at Commander’s Palace, 1403 Washington Avenue, New Orleans, LA.

Ochsner Provides Free Prostate Screening Blood Tests Just In Time for Father's Day

NEW ORLEANS– Give the Gift of Good Health this Father’s Day. On Thursday, June 12, Ochsner Medical Center at 1514 Jefferson Highway in the Main Atrium, will offer free PSA blood tests for men over 40 years of age from 10:00am – 2:00pm to screen for prostate cancer as well as providing general information about prostate health, screening, diagnosis and the latest treatment options. Additionally, Ochsner will provide demonstrations of its da Vinci “S” Surgical System.

A PSA is an easy, quick blood test that measures the level of prostate specific antigen made by the prostate. Rising PSA levels can occur with age, non-cancerous conditions, and also from cancer and can be the first step in detecting early-stage prostate cancer.

Ochsner Summer STAR Program Welcomes Students

Class of 2008 marks 2nd year to offer full-day of research, classes, rotations and lab activities

NEW ORLEANS - Today, Monday, June 2, Ochsner's Academic Division at 1514 Jefferson Highway welcomes 12 students from the New Orleans Class of 2008 to its Science Technology Academics and Research (STAR) Program, a six-week, hands-on, summer research internship that starts today and ends Friday, July 11. This year's participants include students of Jesuit, Patrick F. Taylor Science & Technology Academy, New Orleans Math & Science Charter School, Lusher Charter School, Ben Franklin, and Dominican.

The STAR Program is for high school students who excel in science and gives them an opportunity to participate in hands-on scientific research in a laboratory setting with research-funded scientists in the areas of Molecular Genetics, Molecular Cardiology, Pediatric Endocrinology, Cellular Immunology, and Infectious Disease. Additionally, the 2008 STAR program will include a new component: leadership classes including learning how to use the Medical Library, Medical Terminology, Effective Teams, workshops on HIPAA, Stress Management, Nutrition and Clinical experiences such as CPR, Radiology, Robotics, Flight Care, Blood Bank and Ochsner's Burkard Air Sampler (a regionally unique device that measures daily pollen counts).

Ochsner Academics is also collaborating with Junior Achievement to offer its Careers to Work Program. Loyola University and Our Lady of the Lake in Baton Rouge will be holding a Financial Aid workshop and a mini tour on main campus will include Tulane University, Our Lady of Holy Cross College and LSU (Baton Rouge).

This program is funded by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana.
